I knew what was happening when I started to menstruate the very first time. I was at my Grandmother's house and had no pads or tampons with me. She didn't have any either since she didn't use them because she had already gone through menopause. I had to ask her to take me to the store to get some feminine supplies.
She made a big deal about me being a woman now. I asked her not to tell my Grandpa so she didn't. I should have asked her not to tell anyone at all. I guess, in her mind she kept her word because she didn't tell my Grandpa - but she told EVERYONE else.
She even told the MAN at the cash register (while I was standing next to her) about how she was surprised at how fast I grew up and that "She's a woman now because she got her first period today but the toilet paper in her cute little panties won't be enough to stop the blood from causing a stain.
If she gets any blood on her clothes, she will have to wash them out for herself so that she knows how to do it. When we get home, I guess I will have to put her first tampon in for her so she knows how to do it right."
We didn't even get any tampons and I wouldn't have let her show me anything anyway! It was the most embarrassing thing I ever went through. I wanted to die right then and there but I still loved her. Her mind was starting to go at that point and she passed away a couple years later.
Today, well I can purchase my own feminine products, but it is a nice memory of my grandmother. Trying to help me out the best way she could and if you think about it, her telling everybody was of pride for her grandchild.
